Frequently Asked Questions

What are the US visa photo requirements?

A square color photo taken in the last 6 months, 600 × 600 pixels in JPG, 240 KB or less. The head, from chin to top of hair, fills 50–69% of the height. Face the camera with a neutral expression and both eyes open, on a plain white or off-white background. Glasses are not allowed.

Why did the DS-160 reject my photo?

The upload checks the size and quality of the photo. Common reasons are a head that is too small or too large, shadows on the face or background, a blurry or dark photo, or glasses. Take a new photo in even light, frame it here and upload the new file.

Is the visa photo the same as the DV lottery photo?

Yes. Both use a 600 × 600 px JPG of 240 KB or less with the same head size and background rules, so the same file works for both.

Do I need a printed photo for the interview?

Some consulates ask for a 2 × 2 inch print as well, for example when the uploaded photo did not pass. Check your consulate's instructions; the "10 × 15 cm print" button gives six copies.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Open this page on your phone, take or choose a photo, and save the file straight to the phone to upload it in the form.
