Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Canada visa photo requirements?
A photo taken in the last 6 months, at least 35 × 45 mm, showing your full face and the top of your shoulders, with the head 31–36 mm from chin to crown and centred, on a plain white or light background, with a neutral expression and eyes open. Non-tinted prescription glasses are allowed if your eyes are clearly visible.
Can I use this for a Canadian passport?
No. Canadian passports use 50 × 70 mm photos with the studio's name, address and date on the back, so they must come from a photographer. This page is for visitor visas, study permits and work permits.
Do I need prints or a digital file?
Online applications take a digital photo; paper applications need two identical printed photos. Your application guide says which one applies.
Can the background be replaced?
IRCC asks for photos that are not altered. Stand in front of a plain white or light wall and choose "Keep original", so the tool only crops and resizes the photo.
Can I take the photo myself?
Yes. The visa photo rules do not ask for a studio. Use even light from the front, a plain wall behind you, and ask someone to take the photo at eye level.
