Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Schengen visa photo requirements?

A colour photo taken in the last 6 months, 35 × 45 mm, with the head 32–36 mm from chin to crown. Face the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed, eyes open, on a plain light background without shadows. Avoid glasses, which cause reflections.

Which background colour is required?

A plain, light background. France and some other consulates refuse pure white, so light grey is the safer choice. If your visa centre's checklist names a colour, use that one.

How many photos do I need?

Usually one or two, depending on the consulate; the checklist from the embassy or visa centre gives the number. One 10 × 15 cm print gives eight.

Are the rules the same for every Schengen country?

The size and head rules follow the same ICAO standard everywhere. The background colour and the number of photos can differ, so read the checklist of the country you apply to.

Can I take the photo with my phone?

Yes. Ask someone to take it from about 1.5 m away at eye level, with light from the front so there are no shadows, then frame it here.
