Frequently Asked Questions
What are the UK passport photo rules?
A recent colour photo on a plain cream or light grey background, facing forwards and looking straight at the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed, eyes open with no hair across them, no shadows, and no head covering unless for religious or medical reasons. Avoid glasses if you can; sunglasses and tinted glasses are not allowed.
Can I take my own digital photo for the online application?
Yes. The online service accepts a photo taken on your own device if it is at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall and between 50 KB and 10 MB. "Download photo" gives a 700 × 900 px JPG.
Will it pass if the background is replaced?
The rules ask for a photo that has not been altered by software. For the best chance, stand in front of a plain light grey or cream wall and choose "Keep original", so the tool only crops and resizes your photo.
What head size is needed on a printed photo?
29 to 34 mm from the chin to the crown on a 45 × 35 mm print. The tool places the head at about 31.5 mm, in the middle of that range.
Where can I print UK passport photos?
Download the 10 × 15 cm sheet and print it as a standard 6 × 4 inch photo at a supermarket, chemist or photo kiosk, then cut along the grey lines. The rules ask for prints of professional quality on photo paper.
