Frequently Asked Questions
What are the DV lottery photo requirements?
A square color photo taken in the last 6 months, 600 × 600 pixels, in JPG of 240 KB or less. The head fills 50–69% of the height, and the person faces the camera with both eyes open, without glasses, on a plain white or off-white background.
Can a photo disqualify my entry?
Yes. An entry can be disqualified if a photo does not meet the rules, has been altered, or is the same photo as in an earlier year. Take a new photo of every person for each entry, ideally against a plain white wall with "Keep original" chosen, so the photo is only cropped and resized.
Do I need photos of my spouse and children?
Yes. The entry must list your spouse and every unmarried child under 21, each with a photo, even if they will not move with you.
Where do I submit the photo?
Only on the official State Department site, dvprogram.state.gov, during the entry period it announces. Other sites that offer to enter for you are not official.
Can I scan an old printed photo?
The rules allow scanning a 2 × 2 inch print at 300 dpi, but the photo must still be less than 6 months old and new for this entry. A fresh phone photo framed here is simpler.
