Why can't I open HEIC photos on Windows?
Windows needs extra HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store to show HEIC, and one of them is usually paid. Converting to JPG avoids that.
How do I make my iPhone take JPG photos?
Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG; photos you already took stay HEIC.
Will the JPG files be bigger?
Yes, often about twice the HEIC size, because HEIC compresses better. They are still small enough for email and messages.
What about Live Photos?
Only the still photo is converted. The short video part of a Live Photo is not included.
